Completion of New York’s inaugural offshore wind farm

The final wind turbine has been installed at South Fork Wind, officially crowning it as New Yorkโ€™s first offshore wind farm! A collaboration between ร˜rsted and Eversource Energy, this eco-queen boasts the power to light up around 70,000 homes and take 60,000 gas-guzzling cars off the roads, making a major dent in our carbon footprint. But, just like an episode of Succession, thereโ€™s juicy drama as Eversource Energy hands off it’s share to Global Infrastructure Partners – talk about a plot twist!

New Yorkโ€™s First Offshore Wind Farm Installs Final Wind Turbine

The installation of the twelfth and final wind turbine has been completed at South Fork Wind, marking a milestone for New Yorkโ€™s offshore wind energy. The project, a collaboration between ร˜rsted and Eversource Energy, announced the big news through social media channels.

On February 21, according to ร˜rstedโ€™s teamโ€™s posts, the final wind turbine was installed.

South Fork Wind, which has a 132 MW capacity and is located about 56 kilometers east of Montauk Point, features 12 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW wind turbines rooted on monopile foundations. The monopile foundations and the projectโ€™s offshore substation were put up in summer 2023, while the wind turbine components started arriving around the same time.

The wind farm, which began delivering power to the grid in December 2023, is capable of energizing approximately 70,000 Long Island homes. It also aids in the reduction of up to six million tons of carbon emissions annually, an accomplishment analogous to taking 60,000 cars off the streets.

The wind farm is currently under the ownership of ร˜rsted and Eversource, but a change in proprietorship is on the horizon. Eversource Energy is selling its 50% stake in South Fork Wind and Revolution Wind projects to Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), whilst keeping its previously declared tax equity investment in the former. The transaction is expected to wrap up in mid-2024.
