Offshore wind has a bright future in New Jersey and is likely to play a major role in the fight against climate change for decades to come
Despite Ørsted’s withdrawal from major wind projects off New Jersey’s coast and the celebration by opponents, there’s optimism for the state’s renewable energy future. Atlantic Shores remains dedicated to delivering clean power, projecting substantial economic benefits, including powering over 700,000 homes and generating nearly $2 billion in in-state economic activity. Additionally, groundbreaking on the $250 million New Jersey Wind Port in Salem County promises 1,500 permanent jobs and $500 million in annual economic activity.
While recent challenges underscore the early stages of offshore wind in the U.S., New Jersey’s strategic advantages and robust government support paint a hopeful picture. Despite setbacks like the cancellation of projects like Ocean Wind 1 and 2, New Jersey’s resolve to pursue offshore wind remains unwavering. With its potential in this sector and continued support from policymakers, the state is poised to lead in environmental sustainability and economic prosperity.
