Atlas Public Policy, home to the Climate Program Portal, issued a new report on how funding has been distributed in two years following the Inflation Reduction Actโs passage. The update highlight next steps in putting this money to work, and considers what the future funding looks like.
The update, featuring data through August 2024, finds that federal agencies have awarded $56 billion in IRA funding โ including three-quarters of these funds awarded in 2024.
Atlas finds that IRA funding has supported projects across all fifty states. California, Texas, and Illinois top the list of states that have received the most grant funding, aligning with statesโ population sizes. Alaska, Montana, Vermont, Maine, and Wyoming have seen the most per capita funding to date. 49 states and D.C. will be served by EPAโs Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund Solar for All funding (Iowa is the only state that did not receive funds), money that will offset the costs of installing residential solar for low- and moderate-income households.
Atlas estimates that at least $30 billion in grant funding remains to be awarded. Upcoming grants include Community Change Grants via the Environmental and Climate Justice Block Grant Program, the Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Grant Program, the Rural Energy for America Program, and the Methane Emissions Reduction Program.ย
