Nine Years Post-Paris Agreement: UN Addresses Global Shortcomings in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

TL/DR –

Looks like Mother Earth is sweating, y’all: a 3-degree Celsius rise is on the horizon. While Europeโ€™s showing off a 32.5% emissions cut, the US is falling way short of that 1.5-degree Paris dream. It’s time other world leaders take a page out of Europeโ€™s playbook and cut those emissions like theyโ€™re bad bangs.

As the world gears up for the climate summit, COP29 in Azerbaijan, a series of climate reports warns we’re on track for a dangerous 3 degrees Celsius warming.

Weโ€™re already seeing the impacts with increased storms and heatwaves due to 1.3 degrees of warming.

To hit the Paris goal of 1.5 degrees, global emissions need to be halved by 2030, but weโ€™re not even close.

The persistent burning of fossil fuels means emissions are at a peak, with current global targets only aiming for a weak 2.6 percent cut.

Europe leads with a 32.5 percent drop since 1990, aiming for up to 55 percent by 2030. The U.S. shows some progress with a 17 percent cut since 1990.

Every degree worsens impacts exponentially. 1.5 degrees is a critical target, but any limit on warming is beneficial.
