Two Years Ahead of Schedule, North Carolina Achieves its Target of 80,000 Registered Electric Vehicles

TL/DR โ€“

North Carolina is rolling out the green carpet, smashing their goal of 80,000 registered electric cars two years early. Now, Governor Cooper is calling for an electric extravaganza with even more EV chargers, because why stop at just being early, right? Also on the e-agenda, a heavyweight program to install fast chargers along highways and grants in underfunded areas, because itโ€™s not just about going green, itโ€™s about making sure everyone gets to plug in.

North Carolinians Embrace the Green Wave with EVs

North Carolinians are increasingly making the switch to electric vehicles (EVs), embracing a greener lifestyle.

In 2018, Governor Cooper initiated Executive Order 80. This pushed for a reduction in emissions across the economy, including a boost in zero-emissions vehicle registrations.

The target was set at 80,000 registrations by 2025. Yet, North Carolina achieved this goal two years ahead of schedule.

More Chargers on the Horizon

With the popularity of EVs soaring, Governor Cooper stressed the importance of expanding the charging infrastructure. โ€œThe key is making EVs more affordable with the assurance that charging stations are available most places,โ€ Cooper said.

The state is currently working towards modernizing policies and building charging stations across all communities in North Carolina.

EV Infrastructure Boost

In the coming weeks, a request for proposals will be released for the first round of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. This aims to construct DC Fast Chargers along major highways throughout the state.

Additional support comes from Durham and Kings Mountain, both of which received grants to install new chargers, specifically targeting underserved areas.
