Herbert Thornton has been delivering tires for a living for the last five years but says he’s now ready for a change, and plans to retrain as a welder at a new factory in Paulsboro that will be making foundations for offshore wind turbines.

Thornton, 62, a longtime resident of the Gloucester County town, was one of about 40 people who showed up to its firehouse on Thursday evening to learn about job opportunities at the plant, which will be the first in the United States to make the foundations for the turbines — called monopiles — for the rapidly growing offshore wind industry.
