TL/DR –
California just voted 58-0 to update its electric grid with some fancy tech thatโll double the renewables we can handle โ finally, our power lines might stop acting like they’re stuck in dial-up. State Sen. Steve Padilla says we can’t rely on grandma’s grid to power our future, and heโs right โ these new advanced conductors and GETs are about to get our clean energy game on point! With summer heat waves and wildfires prepping for their encore, this bill’s about to be our climate superhero cape.
The California Assembly passed legislation on Wednesday by a 58:0 vote to boost the stateโs electric grid and speed up renewable energy deployment.
SB 1006 requires utilities to study grid enhancing technologies (GETs) and advanced conductors to report to the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). GETs are cool hardware and software tools that can double renewable energy integration. Advanced conductors replace old power lines, making them more efficient and stronger. State Sen. Steve Padilla authored SB 1006, which was sponsored by Environment California.
โToo often, our old grid gets blocked, stopping new renewable energy,โ said Steven King, Environment Californiaโs clean energy advocate. โSB 1006 helps deploy sensors and tech to unlock grid capacity for more renewable energy. With climate change fueling summer heat waves and wildfires, we must supercharge our path to 100% clean energy.โ
โWe cannot rely on the grid of our grandparents,โ said state Sen. Steve Padilla. โCaliforniaโs grid must keep up with energy demand and climate change. Installing tech like GETs and advanced conductors boosts grid capacity, unleashes more renewable energy, improves reliability, and reduces pressure on rising electric rates.โ
If the state Senate passes SB 1006 in a concurrence vote this week, Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to sign the bill into law by the end of September.
